Rangitikei Community Profile - For the Community Response Model Forum - 22 June 2011

Ministry for Social Development adds to Council's Position Paper - Demographic Change in the District

These position papers have been prepared by the Council’s Policy Team and provide the key statistics that are likely to define the demography of the District in the next few decades. They describe a picture of an ageing and declining population, with the population loss almost entirely from within the under forty years age group. They also confirm that the younger people who remain in the District are likely to include an increasing proportion of those of Maori descent.

The Ministry for Social Development's Information Manager has extended the profile to include statistics from other agencies and indicators relating to employment, travel patterns and health. This was done as part of the regional review of Family and Community Services under the Community Response Model Forums (see communityresponse.org.nz - Taranaki/Whanganui Forum for details).

However, the demographics are only projections. The position papers go on to investigate what the implications of this are likely to be and some of the potential responses that Council could make. As part of its preparation for the 2012-22 Long Term Plan,  Council has begun to describe its preferred future:  firstly, to encourage older people to stay in the District for their retirement and to relocate to the District to retire and secondly, to encourage families to stay in the District and to relocate to the District for the family-friendly lifestyle. The Long Term Plan allows Council to work with local communities to plan its activities and services in a way that gives the best opportunity for success in realising those aspirations.
