Cemetery Database Now Online
The database of records for the cemeteries administered by Council (Clifton - Bulls, Mangaweka, Mt View - Marton, Ratana, Taihape and Turakina) are now available to view through the Rangitikei District Council website: www.rangitikei.govt.nz.
The cemetery search page can be found within the Community Services menu then Cemeteries/Cemetery Search.
To help us keep our database up to date, please let us know if you have updated or erected a headstone or plaque, or if you have more accurate information about a particular site.
Swimming Pool Fences
With summer approaching, we’d like to remind pool owners, or those looking to purchase a pool, of their responsibilities under the ‘Fencing of Swimming Pools Act 1987’.
Council has free information booklets available, which explain what fencing is required, and which pools are exempt. You will need a building consent to construct an appropriate fence – this is so Council can ensure the proposed fencing complies with the Act.
Council will be conducting pool fencing inspections this summer, so please, if you are considering purchasing a pool, check the fencing requirements and add this to your pool budget. If you have an existing pool and fence, please check that it complies with the Act. Our building officers are available if you have any questions regarding the Fencing of Swimming Pools Act.
Railway Crossing in Marton
At its recent meeting the Strategic Planning and Policy Committee discussed the feasibility of installing a footpath crossing over the railway line between Gordon Crescent and Toia St in Marton. An engineer’s estimate to complete the required work was $47,700. The Committee agreed that the proposal would go out for public consultation during the 2012/22 Long Term Plan (LTP) process.
Disposing of Fluorescent Bulbs
Council has received a number of queries about recycling fluorescent bulbs. Fluorescent bulbs – the long tube-like lights seen in public places, and the energy-saver/CFL bulbs – will soon be able to be recycled at the Marton Waste Transfer Station. Depending on demand, this recycling may become available at other Waste Transfer Stations throughout the district.
Trimming trees
Did you know - over 70,000 Powerco customers suffered power cuts in the last 12 months due to trees interfering with power lines. Government regulations require Powerco to pay for the first cut to a tree, to ensure the tree is a safe distance away from lines – or with the tree owner’s permission, it can be removed. However, after this first cut, the tree owner is then responsible for arranging a Powerco-approved tree trimmer to keep the trees trimmed – at the tree owner’s cost.
Unregistered Dogs
If you are a dog owner, you will be aware that your dog (or dogs) should have been registered by 31 July 2011. Owners who have not registered their dogs will be, or have already been, issued with an infringement notice of $300 – plus a 50% penalty on top of the registration cost, AND also lose their Good Owner status. It is also important to let Council know if you have a new dog, that hasn’t been registered before, or a dog has died or been re-homed.
